Fruit Fly Infestation – Effective Tips To Use In Your Home
Most homeowners make the mistake of thinking that fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) are just like regular flies. While it is true that fruit flies and regular houseflies share much in common, the former kind tends to accumulate in number over time especially when the necessary steps to get rid of them are not taken. Failure to recognize fruit flies for what they are and to take the necessary steps to drive them out of your home will lead to a fruit fly infestation. When it comes to driving these flies out of your home, it is important that you do what you can as early as possible.
Here are some effective tips that you can use in order to deal with fruit flies in the home. These tips will not cost you much money, but they will do a good job in helping you get rid of flies. If you think that the insects that you see flying around your house are not the usual house flies, then it is necessary that you take these steps as soon as you can.
Hamper their Breeding
It will be pointless for you to deal with a fruit fly infestation if you do not do anything about hampering their breeding. If you focus too much on killing the flying insects that you see without addressing the cause of the infestation, then your problem will just keep coming back. The first thing that you should do is to get a hold of a can of Pyre thin spray or fly spray and find the fruit flies’ nesting ground. Find the eggs and spray them deliberately with fly spray. This will help you make sure that no fruit fly will be growing in your home from then on.
Dispose of the Larvae
After spraying the flies’ nesting ground, you should physically remove the unhatched larvae and dispose of them. Find a dustpan and any home tool that you can use as a scraper and remove the larvae from your property. Place them in a secure plastic container and throw them away in the trash. For good measure, spray a deliberate amount of Pyre thin or fly spray inside the plastic bag before sealing it. Spray a good amount of chemical on the area where you found these larvae as well, to kill the hidden germs are still there.
Catch the Flies
Believe it or not, it is pretty easy and cheap to catch the fruit flies that are flying around your house. You can easily find the materials that you need in your home or in your local grocery store. When it comes to dealing with fruit flies in the home, an improvised trap made of a jar, vinegar, and home-grade dish detergent will do the trick.
All you have to do is to add a couple of drops of apple cider or balsamic vinegar to a good serving of dish detergent. Place the mixture in a jar with the lid popped open. Place your improvised trap in the area where you see these buggers flying around and leave it there.
These homemade traps are very effective tools for dealing with a fruit fly infestation because the mixture inside the jar attracts and traps the flies. Once you see that there is a good number of flies in the jar, all that you have to do is to pop the lid on and get rid of the jar. Repeat for the different parts of your home where you see a good number of flies. Do not forget to securely close the lid of the jars once done, to make sure that the trapped flies will be able to get out.
Keep your Home Clean
Once you have taken the necessary steps to get rid of the adult fruit flies and their eggs, you need to make sure that you will not deal with the same problem again. The key to avoid keeping fruit flies in the home is simple: keep your house clean. In addition to the usual cleaning duties in your routine, make sure that you visit the area that are prone to serving as flies’ nesting grounds regularly. Clear and clean the area up as soon as you notice the slightest sign of a fruit fly problem.
Do not panic if you start noticing fruit flies in the home. The steps that you have to take to get rid of them and keep them out are very simple. Take note of these steps and carry them out as soon as you notice the earliest signs of a fruit fly infestation.
